Mobile ‘Apps’ Increase Language & Learning

Todd Houston

The Alabama Ear Institute was honored to host Todd Houston, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert AVT, University of Akron in presenting a workshop on “Using Mobile Technology to Enhance Language & Learning in Children:  Early Intervention Through School Age.”   This two-day workshop provided professionals with a hands-on experience of incorporating tablet computers, such as the iPad, and selected applications (i.e., “apps”) as essential tools for intervention and teaching.

Professionals in a range of settings are now turning more frequently to the use of this technology as a learning tool to enhance communication development and learning in children with speech and language delays, especially those with autism, hearing loss, and a range of syndromes/diagnoses.   Focusing on using the iPad and similar technology to increase child/student engagement, attention, and improved learning and communication outcomes, participants not only received information on specific applications but were divided into groups to research possible apps and gave presentations on how these apps might be incorporated into their daily activities in the classroom or clinical settings.

TheAlabama Ear Institute is proud to offer this listing of apps compiled by Dr. Houston and workshop participants as a resource for professionals who are utilizing the new technology.
